North Haven, CT (August 4th, 2020) - Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) announced today it has won a Department of Energy (DOE) Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to develop a novel solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power generation system. PCI’s innovations offer improved efficiency for lower carbon footprint and produces a concentrated CO2 stream while using fossil fuels, the predominant energy source in the U.S.
PCI’s proposed technology enhances the efficiency of the fuel cell and the economics of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, thus reducing costs and environmental impacts. A high efficiency process to produce cost-effective power using solid oxide fuel cells combined with CO2 capture will permit expansion of its adoption in applications where current SOFC stacks have not been cost-effective.
PCI’s technology will be made possible through SOFC system improvements. The approach offers greater energy and environmental benefits, including higher efficiency, lower cost, longer life of the power generation systems, and easier CO2 capture.
According to Subir Roychoudhury, PCI VP and Principal Investigator, “We’re developing a higher overall efficiency system while adapting the SOFC system for CO2 capture. The proposed technology offers a potential breakthrough substantially improving the efficiency, life, CO2 reduction and capture, and overall economic viability of SOFC-based power generation systems.”
Kevin Burns, President of PCI, adds “We’re happy that DOE has given us the chance to show what this technology can do. This is technically challenging, but based on sound principles. We’re working to extend the limits of SOFC system efficiency, durability and environmental sustainability, with potential implementation across all SOFC systems. The opportunity is higher efficiency conversion of natural gas to electricity at lower cost, combined with a gentler environmental impact, advancing DOE’s mission of efficient generation of low-cost electricity with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS).”
